1984, Los Angeles, California I had a summer job shoveling gravel at an Arizona retirement village when a friend gave me a call. He said his older sister had some connections with the Olympics and that they needed more performers for the opening ceremonies. Would I be interested in dropping my shovel for a couple of weeks to be a part of it? What would you have done?
Dressed as pioneers we were supposed to wheel a fake wagon out and then quickly assemble a building while others danced. It was fun: I got out of the heat; got to rehearse with hundreds of pretty girls; and it was a shot of our group that ended up being broadcast around the world. I like to think that Indira Ghandi saw me on TV before she died.
The only sad part of the whole trip was the night before the ceremony. We went to Westwood to eat and catch a movie. It was Friday night and there was a big crowd. Among other things, it was the premiere of "Purple Rain" and people were lined up around the block wearing lace and lingerie.
While we were eating we heard sirens and when we came out of the restaurant the street was littered with emergency vehicles and chaos. Someone had driven off Westwood Boulevard and right into the crowd. People were walking around in shock – older ones in horror and younger ones talked like they had just seen a stunt from a movie. But this was no movie. Quite a few people were injured and one woman died.
This shot is from a rehearsal at the coliseum.
